Lost Boys | School of Visual Effects is looking to fill a position of Houdini Effects Technical Director Program Lead.

Main Duties:

– Design and delivery of effects technical director curriculum in the classroom, using appropriate software such as Houdini, Nuke, Kdenlive, and others.
– Teach and lecture on specialized topics to support effects technical director career preparation, including but not limited to industry studies, exercises, projects, career preparation, and exams.
– Insure all lectures are recorded and saved to our secure internal server, verifying audio/video quality is sufficient for subsequent review.
– Work closely with appointed staff to ensure that all curriculum, (primarily lecture video content) is uploaded and documented effectively for access through our online curriculum management system.
– Provide one on one mentoring to the students, supporting portfolio and professional job skills development.
– Research new effects techniques/workflows and maintain close industry contact to maintain ongoing curriculum development to ensure an industry relevant curriculum.
– Research and make recommendations for software and hardware specific to the visual effects field; install software and maintain workstations as required.
– Grading all relevant student projects, courses, and exams by the deadlines required by the school administration.

Requirements:

– Completion of Bachelors Degree or College Diploma in a relevant field
– Prior experience in instruction or mentorship an asset
– A minimum of 3-5 years production experience working on high end broadcast and feature film visual effects projects an asset.

Practical experience in several or all of the following disciplines:

– Procedural workflows (geometry & texturing)
– Mantra/Redshift shading, lighting, & rendering
– Environmental effects (rain, snow, dust, smoke…)
– Particle systems
– Digital destruction workflows
– Fluid effects
– Python & VEX

Full-time, 35 hour per weeks, Permanent

4 weeks paid vacation per year

Salary ranges on experience ($80,000 – 120,000.00 per year)

Method Studios Vancouver is actively seeking junior CG artists as RENDER TECHNICIANS to join our I/O team.

Description

Reporting to the I/O Manager and Technical Operations Manager, the Rendering Technician will be responsible for render farm management and supporting backup and archive operations. This role offers excellent opportunities for the right individual to acquire a broad based knowledge of Visual Effects procedures within a production environment.

Duties
– Communicate with productions to efficiently monitor and manage the render farm processes and priorities
– Quickly solve any rendering issues, ensuring all 2D and 3D rendering jobs are completed on schedule.
– Identify bottlenecks and help develop improved rendering efficiencies
– Facilitate transferring data between facilities
– Participate in daily archive and restore requests from tape archives

Qualifications

– Degree or Diploma in Computer Science or Film-related discipline
– High degree of computer literacy
– Excellent problem solving and communication skills
– Ability to record information accurately and produce reports
– Must be able to take instructions and work as part of a team, with the capacity to work with minimal supervision when required
– Enthusiasm to learn and develop professionally
– Good understanding of relevant 2D and 3D software packages (eg. Maya,Houdini,Nuke)
– Experience in scripting with Python and Bash desirable but not essential
– Ability to learn new software quickly, and learn on the job, if necessary
– Ability to work under pressure, if required

METHOD VANCOUVER is actively seeking VFX Coordinators for current and upcoming feature film projects.

Reporting to the Production Manager, Visual Effects, the VFX Coordinator is responsible for the management of information flow during a project. Taking client requests, recording client notes, generating schedules, invoices and work orders are all part of the daily responsibilities of the VFX Coordinator.

In addition, the VFX Coordinator serves as a key front-line representative of the company and frequently deals directly with clients. This direct client interaction requires a highly professional demeanour and diplomacy.

Duties

  • Work with production team and Pipeline to set up shot tracking system (Shotgun) for the project
  • Ensure clear file structure is in place, create shot directories for all shots. As show progresses, keep on top of new directory needs, and work with artists to create directories when necessary.
  • Participate in show set-up meetings, take notes from these meetings and confirm that all stages of set-up are documented and assigned.
  • Introduce new artists to Shotgun and timesheets, ensure the crew is familiar with show procedures.  Ensure that all crew are added to appropriate email groups.
  • Work with I/O department to set up data transfer procedures.  Upload and download material from ftp site / aspera, or establish how I/O will handle downloads if appropriate.
  • Monitor plate turnover dates and liaise with studio data team when plates come in.
  • Maintain list of all roto and matchmove requests and target dates and completion status.
  • Liaise with roto/mm coordinator to set priorities.
  • Maintain database of shot data to include all material sent from client and request any missing material from client.
  • Set up and maintain shot board.
  • Work with supervisor and producer to create dailies playlist.  Work with editor to prepare dailies material before artists are in the theatre. Notify relevant artists when it is time to be in dailies. Let crew know if dailies is cancelled or delayed.
  • Take notes during dailies and review with supervisor before publishing to the crew. Ensure all dailies notes are input into Shotgun and emailed to relevant artists and established email groups.
  • Collect client feedback and input into Shotgun, and notify relevant artists and email groups
  • Book rooms for client calls and meetings, and maintain all calendar events per production team.
  • Set up cinesync sessions with proper playlist material established by client and supervisor.  Save and file all notes and cinesync images, review with supervisor and distribute appropriately.
  • Participate in daily production meetings and artist rounds with production team and follow up on notes and action items that come from these.
  • Walk the floor, gather artist needs, follow-up on action items. Have a general idea of what the team is working on; inform producer/supervisor when they know of issues that are happening on the floor.
  • Maintain current list of all shot statuses and task assignments (through Shotgun and other means.)
  • Make sure artists are aware of targets and assure that they have all info and materials they need, and help them get it if they don’t.
  • Create daily posting targets list and ensure all relevant artists are aware of targets.  Maintain communication to know when material is ready for review by supervisor, and notify producer if any targets will be missed
  • Complete submission forms per client specifications, and submit with every submission to client. Fling shots for delivery to client, prep any paper work that needs to go with it and update shotgun to reflect what’s been delivered.
  • Manage render farm priorities: work with crew to establish render needs, and with studio wranglers to ensure that available resource matches needs.
  • Collect timesheets from crew, ensure they’re all complete and pass to producer for review and approval.
  • Help with ordering / organizing lunch / dinner when working OT
  • On completion of project, ensure that all shot finals and plates are copied to the studio library/finals area.

Qualifications

MUST HAVE experience working at a visual effects studio or similar CG-related industry, specifically aiding in the asset production and artist workflow of a project.
Must be qualified to work in Canada (citizen or PR) or already have open work permit
Must be familiar with Office programs such as Word and Excel
Experience with production programs such as Filemaker Pro and Shotgun are assets
This is a full-time, contract position requiring periodic overtime.

About the Position
You have an excellent working knowledge of Nuke, good artistic and design skills and an excellent eye for composition, colour space as well as technical knowledge of lighting interactions and photography.  You are responsible for creation, revision, maintenance and support of the layered elements of rendered shots.  You possess the ability to work through challenging shots with solutions for final delivery. Composite shots for the show in a timely manner
Performs Blue/green screen extractions
Seamless integration of live action, miniature and CGI sources
Follows Goldtooth data storage/data naming and retrieval processes outlined in studio
Makes sure that all work done is accounted for and entered into Shotgun daily
Identifies problems with respect to timelines and delivery schedules and flags these to the senior team
 

Requirements

1-3 years of compositing experience in the VFX and or film industry
Knowledge of NUKE demonstrated in your portfolio
Knowledge of keying, 3D integration, camera projection, colour correction and rotoscope
Knowledge of 2D and 3D tracking and stabilization
Excellent attention to detail
Experience with live action and photo-real CG projects
Eye for photo-realism
